British ValuesPromoting British Values

The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated (2014).  At Hollywood these values are reinforced regularly with each half term having a “values” theme and the values are woven in to the curriculum through a wide range of opportunities and make links to significant national and international events.

Autumn 1 - The rule of law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies.  From their early days in Reception, pupils are taught the rules of the school and the value and reasons behind laws; that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.  Each class agrees its own school rules at the start of the year and all children sign up to follow these rules.  They are displayed in the classroom and referred to regular.

Autumn 2 - Discrimination

At Hollywood we celebrate the similarities and differences between each other.  Our curriculum supports the development of pupils, staff and our community partners to be aware of, and actively discourage against, sexual, racial, gender or disability discrimination both in school and the wider world.   We celebrate the positive contributions that all people can make to our school and global community.   Topical themes such as Anti-bullying Week, Black History month and religious festivals are incorporated into the curriculum.

Spring 1 - Tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs

Hollywood is situated on the edge of Birmingham with all its cultural diversity and we therefore place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our RE, PSHE and topic themes are also opportunities for this. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. Children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths.  There is a four year rolling programme of faith assemblies which are shared across the school and with families.   At Hollywood we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.

Spring 2 - Mutual respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.  This value is embedded in the curriculum and each of the other “values” themes.

Summer 1 - Democracy

Each year the children decide upon their class rules and the rights associated with these. All the children contribute to the drawing up of the rules and these are sent home and signed as an agreement (Theme 1, Rule of Law).  Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have a school council which meets regularly to discuss issues raised in class council meetings. The council has its own budget and is able to genuinely effect change within the school.  Each class votes for two council representatives who attend meetings and report back to their class.  Members of the Senior Management Team regular attend the School Council meetings. 

Summer 2 - Individual liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through a choice of learning challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
